π‘ Island Life HackHow to Actually Drive Safely in Phuket Monsoon SeasonAfter this week's incidents, here's what 10 years on these roads actually teaches you: Leave earlier, not faster. Wet roads plus monsoon debris means stopping distances double. The only way to arrive on time is to start earlier - not to drive faster. Use the THA Disaster Alert app. Download it (iOS and Android), enable push alerts. It sends real-time flash flood and severe weather warnings by province. Phuket alerts are actually reliable. Know your high-flood roads. The usual suspects: the underpass near Central Phuket, the Kathu low-point stretch, and anywhere near the Chalong area after 30 minutes of sustained rain. If you see water pooling on the road, it's already deeper than it looks. Keep your headlights on, always. Visibility on this island drops fast in rain. The law requires lights - and it's just good sense regardless. If riding a motorbike: jacket and helmet, every time. Rain means slick roads and reduced visibility from other drivers. This is not the time to run to 7-Eleven in flip flops and a t-shirt. It never was. |

π Out and AboutTakieng Restaurant - Mai Khao (Renaissance Phuket Resort)
Traditional Thai food in a tropical garden setting - not a tourist-trap interpretation of it, actual Thai food. Tom yum that actually has kick, stir-fried seafood that hasn't been toned down for the hotel crowd. Mains run ΰΈΏ150-300. Eatigo is listing up to 50% off late-night dining slots - which makes a sit-down Thai dinner at a beachside resort genuinely affordable. Worth booking before someone figures this out more broadly. Roads, crackdowns, and a light rail that finally has a real timeline. This week had a lot going on under the surface, as most weeks here do. Immigration is closed Thursday and Friday - don't forget. And if you're driving anywhere near the Bypass Road or Chalong this week, give it the respect it deserves. Sabai sabai - see you next Friday, 10 July. |
