Southwest swells are running 1.5 to 2m along the west coast through the weekend. Andaman diving is manageable for experienced divers but expect choppy crossings. East coast and bay sites are cleaner - Chalong, Cape Panwa, Yamu.
🚚 Roads - rain and Por Tor traffic
Por Tor festival ceremonies wrap this Saturday around the Ranong Road and Phuket Road shrines. Expect slow crawls through Phuket Town from 17:00 onward Saturday evening. The Heroines Monument junction is its usual self. Add 15 minutes.
🎓 This weekend
Sunday has a lot going on - Lard Yai Walking Street in Old Town (16:00), the CULT Black Rock Hike from Nai Harn Lake at 6:30am, and the Meet Me Offline community sunset walk to Promthep Cape. Three very different Sundays to choose from.
📍 Por Tor final days
The Hungry Ghost Festival runs through September 10 at the Seng Tek Bel Shrine and Ranong Road Market in Phuket Town. Free entry. The red turtle cakes (ang ku) are worth picking up - find them from the street stalls around the shrine area.
⚠️ Visa deadline alert - 10 days
September 15 is when the 30-day visa exemption takes effect. If someone is flying into Phuket after that date expecting 60 days, they need to know. Full breakdown in this week's Story of the Week.

⭐ Story of the Week
Thailand's 30-Day Visa Rule Is Now Official. The Clock Runs Out September 15.
It's in the Royal Gazette. Effective September 15, 2026, the 60-day visa-free exemption is gone for most nationalities. The standard allowance drops to 30 days, with a single 30-day extension available at your local immigration office.
Anyone entering Thailand from September 15 onward on a passport from one of 60 eligible countries gets 30 days. That's it. No more back-to-back 60-day runs. Visa on Arrival is now restricted to just three countries: Azerbaijan, Belarus, and Serbia.
The good news: if you enter Phuket on or before September 14, your existing 60-day stamp is honoured in full. Land border limits for most nationalities remain capped at two visa-free entries per calendar year. ASEAN passport holders are exempt from that cap.
For digital nomads, remote workers, and anyone who has been stretching stays with visa exemption runs - this is the end of that strategy. The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), Thailand Elite, or Non-Immigrant categories are your formal alternatives.
What This Means for Residents
● If family or friends are visiting after Sep 14: Alert them now - 30 days is all they get. If they need longer, they should apply for the right visa before arriving or plan for an extension at Phuket Immigration (฿1,900).
● If you've been living on exemption runs: Time to formalise. The DTV is the most practical option for freelancers - 180 days, renewable remotely. Consult a licensed adviser before your next border crossing.
● If you're already on a Non-Immigrant, retirement, or marriage visa: Nothing changes for you. This only affects visa-exemption entries.

Phuket's roads killed or injured 78 people a day this year. Now there's a database.
Phuket just launched a Provincial Road Accident Information Centre aggregating live trauma data from four hospitals and police incident logs. Since January: 19,001 casualties. 120 deaths. Patong Hill, the Heroines Monument roundabout, and Thepkrasattri Road are flagged highest-risk. Data collection is step one. Enforcement is still step two.

70% of Phuket's hotels are operating without a valid licence. The anti-corruption commission just showed up.
Roughly 4,200 of the island's estimated 6,000 accommodation properties are unlicensed - the result of an Interior Ministry building regulation expiring in August 2025. The PACC ran joint inspections last Sunday following complaints from SMEs about extortion during safety certification. If you rent short-term in Rawai, Chalong, or Kathu, this affects your neighbourhood's housing availability.

Local operators rallied on Patong Beach this week targeting disruptive tourists and foreign nationals hiding behind Thai nominee ownership structures. The Tourism Minister confirmed deportation proceedings for anyone violating Thai law. Organisers were clear: this is not anti-expat sentiment. It's about protecting legitimate local commerce.
🛂 Immigration
2,900+ visa run refusals since early 2025 - and officers can now revoke your extension.
Immigration Bureau orders now authorize airport and land border officers to deny entry to anyone entering visa-free more than twice without documented justification. Provincial offices can also revoke extension approvals for habitual runners. Combined with the September 15 rule change, the era of the casual visa run is effectively over.

BISP posts record IGCSE results: 44% at A*/A.
British International School Phuket is celebrating its strongest-ever IGCSE cohort. 44% A*/A grades. The school also has the BISP Soccer 7s tournament opening registration - the 21st edition runs November 20-21. If your kid plays football, worth looking at.

InterContinental Residences coming to Kamala - 111 units, from studios to 5-bed penthouses.
IHG and Proud Real Estate have unveiled branded residences at the Two Michelin Key-rated InterContinental Phuket Resort on Kamala's "Millionaire's Mile." Units run from 59sqm to 425sqm. 24/7 concierge, private pools, yacht access. This kind of project drives land valuations across the entire central west coast corridor.

Pre-Register on the THIM App Before October - Save Yourself Airport Pain
The THIM immigration super-app goes live October 1. Built by AWS and the Immigration Bureau, it replaces manual arrival cards with a permanent digital profile. Anyone with a foreign passport who travels in and out of Thailand should set this up before the rush hits.
What to do now:
Download the pilot app and complete your e-KYC profile - passport scan, facial recognition, contact details. One setup, valid permanently.
Link your 90-day reporting to the platform if you're on a long-stay visa. The app allows online submissions - no more Phuket Immigration queue for this specific task.
Pre-register before the official launch to avoid the first-week server chaos. Early adopters report the pilot is functional - not perfect, but workable.
Tell your incoming guests about it. Anyone arriving after October 1 who hasn't set up their profile will face longer airport gate processing.

💸 Foreign income tax - if you've been ignoring this, stop
If you spend 180+ days per year in Thailand and remit foreign income into a Thai bank account, you're a tax resident and the PND 90/91 filing rules apply. The enforcement window tightened in 2026. If this is new information, talk to a licensed Thai tax adviser before the end of the year.
👤 Phuket Immigration looking for expat volunteers
Long-term residents on retirement or marriage visa extensions can apply to volunteer at Phuket Immigration - helping with document checks, form completion, and guiding other expats through the process. If you've got the patience for it, this is a legitimate way to give something back.

Grandma Jazz Cafe - Kamala Hill

Up on the hill between Kamala and Patong, there's a small community cafe that most people on the island have never heard of. Grandma Jazz does specialty drip coffee, homemade cakes, and a handful of local light meals. It's not trying to be anything except what it is.
Open mountain views surround the building, giving the whole place a calm, homey feel, whether you're there to work, rest, or just hang out. The menu of hand crafted refreshments is small but satisfying, and the staff are warm without hovering.
The hill setting means the drive is the experience. Go on a weekday morning. Take the winding road slow, arrive early, and order the drip.
Before: Walk the Kamala beachfront promenade at sunrise (parking at the beach is easy before 8am).
After: Head back down to Kamala village for lunch at any of the small shophouse spots along the main road.

Soho Pool Club - Boat Lagoon Marina, Koh Kaew
Northern Thai khao soi, healthy brunch bowls, and craft drinks, priced ฿200-450. This one has been quietly picking up a following among the marina crowd and northern Phuket residents looking for something other than the usual brunch circuit. Worth a visit if you're near Koh Kaew.
Azzurra - Angsana Laguna, Bang Tao Beach
Chef Giampiero Quartararo is running coastal Italian - seafood pasta and wood-fired pizza at ฿400-1,200. It's a hotel restaurant, which means the setting is polished and the prices reflect it. Good for a slow dinner when you want proper Italian without flying to Bangkok. More details here.

Navera MGallery - Surin Beach
Accor's boutique collection is opening 48 luxury suites and villas at Surin, starting at 100sqm with private pool options. The maritime-Sino-Portuguese design aesthetic is either very considered or very hotel-marketing. Either way, Surin Beach's profile as a low-density luxury zone keeps building.
Market signal: RevPAR down, branded residences up
Hotel revenue per available room dropped 8.7% in the first half of 2026 - seasonal softness plus oversupply in certain zones. But long-term residential demand, especially for branded pool villas in Kamala, Cherng Talay, and Layan, remains strong. Rental yields in those corridors are running 7-12%.
⚖ Legal Watch
Land Department audits of Thai nominee corporate structures intensified in mid-2026. If you have a foreign-linked company holding land or property, your Thai equity partners may be getting flagged. The proposed 99-year leasehold reform and 75% foreign condo quota increase remain stalled in draft. Current law still stands: 30-year leasehold, 49% foreign freehold cap per building.
