This was a heavy week for Thailand. On 7 August, a 14-year-old student opened fire at a school in Nonthaburi, killing six people - including himself - and injuring 15 others, before it emerged he had shot his grandparents at home that same morning. The tragedy has shaken the country and pushed schools, police, and the Education Ministry into fast, sweeping action. This isn't a story about one town anymore - it's about how Thailand protects its children going forward.
It's also a week that pulled back the curtain on other things simmering under the surface. More on all of that below.
FAKE CITIZENSHIP: The Ministry of Interior confirmed an Israeli national held fraudulent Thai citizenship for a decade while directing over 100 nominee entities worth ฿5 billion in Kathu. The audits are expanding.

LION BITE: A tourist was bitten by a lion cub at a commercial cafe. Staff handed over iodine and said rabies shots weren't needed. They were wrong. The tourist figured that out themselves.
AIR INDIA: That Phuket-Delhi flight that "hit turbulence" on 4 August and dropped 300 feet? It wasn't turbulence. Investigators found nine system failures in sixty seconds. AAIB and Airbus are now formally investigating.

6 Dead in Nonthaburi School Shooting: Thailand Moves to Tighten School Security Nationwide
On 7 August, a 14-year-old student opened fire at Depsirin Nonthaburi School, killing six people - three teachers, a secretary, a deputy school director, and himself - and injuring 15 others, two critically. Before arriving at school that morning, the gunman had shot and killed his grandparents at their home. Police have not yet disclosed a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The tragedy has triggered swift nationwide action. Education Minister Prasert Chandraruangthong is seeking Cabinet approval for tougher school safety rules that would let designated teachers inspect for and confiscate weapons, and conduct searches when there's reasonable suspicion of danger. Separately, Royal Thai Police Commissioner-General Kitrat Phanphet has ordered a nationwide crackdown on illegal firearms, ammunition, and explosives, with increased patrols and inspections at public places and crowded locations - including a first arrest already made in Phuket.
In a related incident, Hat Yai College in Songkhla briefly closed and shifted to online learning after a former foreign teacher posted firearm images online; he had already left Thailand, and immigration has flagged him should he attempt to return.

If your child attends school in Thailand: Expect new weapons-inspection protocols and search procedures to roll out as Cabinet approval moves forward - schools nationwide are being asked to increase vigilance.
If you work in education: Designated staff may soon be authorized to inspect bags and confiscate prohibited items; watch for official Ministry of Education guidance.

Wyndham Grand Kamala Is Turning Handmade Dolls Into Senior Stipends
This one's genuinely good. Wyndham Grand Phuket Kalim Bay has launched a community initiative called "Crafted by Heart, Made for Impact" in partnership with D-HOPE Phuket and a group of Kamala artisans called Baan Nok Lay. The idea is simple: they sell handcrafted fabric turtle and elephant dolls - made from Sano Tik fabric - and every baht of proceeds funds something real.
Specifically: annual living stipends for 100 community seniors, local student scholarships, and grassroots beach cleanups. This isn't a "we planted some trees" press release. The artisans are real, the beneficiaries are named, and the dolls are actually lovely.

Monsoon Swimming: Go East
August red flags on the west coast aren't going anywhere soon. But the island has protected water if you know where to look.
- Check the east coast first. Ao Yon Bay and the sheltered inlets around Chalong are buffered from southwest monsoon swells. Calmer, cleaner water than anywhere on the west side right now.
- Trust Kata Noi's flag system. It's one of the few beaches with a consistent daily safety assessment. Green flag = fine. Yellow = caution. Red = stay out. Simple, and the lifeguards actually update it.
- Paddleboard in Chalong Bay. The inner bay near Chalong Pier is well-sheltered during monsoon and has rental options nearby. Morning sessions before 9am are best before the wind picks up.
- Avoid the canals and waterways right now. This week was a reminder that swollen inland waterways during peak rainfall are genuinely dangerous. Not the week for a kayak along a lowland canal.

🏠 Property Transfer Fee Cut - Act Before Year-End
The Thai Cabinet has extended reduced registration fees on residential property transfers and mortgage registrations through the end of 2026, for properties valued up to ฿7 million. The transfer fee drops from 2.0% to 0.01%, and mortgage registration from 1.0% to 0.01% - a saving of approximately ฿120,000 on a ฿6 million purchase. If you're closing on a condo or registering a mortgage this year, make sure your lawyer locks the date before 31 December.
⚖️ Leasehold Extension Clause - Supreme Court Ruling
A Supreme Court precedent has confirmed that "30+30+30" extension clauses in long-term leasehold agreements are not automatically enforceable under Thai law - each renewal period requires active registration. If you're holding a residential leasehold with extension clauses built into the contract, have a qualified Thai property lawyer review its structure now, not when the first 30 years runs out. Rawai Beach Promenade - no booking needed
This is how seafood is supposed to work: pick your fish and prawns directly from local fishermen's buckets on the promenade, hand them to the adjacent cooking stall, and eat 20 minutes later with your feet on the concrete and a Leo in hand.
Live tiger prawns, grouper, lobster, squid - all priced by weight. The cooking fee is typically ฿100-200 per dish depending on preparation. It's not cheap by local standards, but it's honest and fresh in a way that a laminated resort menu never is.
No Instagram strategy. No concept. Just a kitchen that opens early and closes when the catch runs out.
