Eventful week. On Tuesday afternoon, a chlorine gas tank exploded at the Phuket Town waterworks. On Saturday, immigration officers pulled a Russian crime boss out of a Chalong villa. By Tuesday morning, airport customs were opening checked bags containing 33 kilograms of cannabis belonging to four European teenagers.
This island has a way of making things hard to hide.

CHLORINE EMERGENCY: A high-pressure tank blew at the Damrong Road waterworks Tuesday at 1:15pm. Governor Kerdsom was on site within the hour. Contained, no casualties - but the water infrastructure is now under full audit.
CRIME BOSS ARRESTED: Immigration Bureau raided a residential villa in Chalong on Saturday. The man inside was the alleged head of a Russian organized crime syndicate, sitting on an international extradition warrant. He had been in an expat suburb.
AIRPORT BUST: Four young Europeans - two French, two Swiss, one of them 18 years old - tried to board an international flight home with 33.3kg of vacuum-sealed cannabis in their checked bags. Customs caught it. All four are now in Thai custody.
NOMINEE AUDIT: Over 600 companies island-wide are now under investigation. Thirty-nine court cases filed. Three unlicensed hotels exposed. If your business uses a nominee structure, this is the week to call your lawyer.

🙏 Buddhist Lent has started: Asalha Puja was Wednesday, Khao Phansa Thursday. Both were nationwide alcohol dry days. 🛒 Weekend markets on: Naka Night Market runs Saturday and Sunday on Chao Fa West Road. Lard Yai Walking Street is Sunday evening on Thalang Road. Both free, both start around 4pm.
💧 Phuket Town tap water: The municipality confirmed containment and no contamination following Tuesday's waterworks blast. Water quality was not affected. If anything looks or smells unusual, report it to 076-211111.

Chlorine Gas Emergency at Phuket Town Waterworks
At 1:15pm on Tuesday, a high-pressure chlorine gas tank exploded inside the Phuket Municipal Waterworks facility on Damrong Road in Talad Yai. Emergency services and a hazmat team responded immediately.
Governor Chotnarin Kerdsom arrived on site accompanied by DPM Head Worath Surawadee and Muang District Chief Siwatch Rawangkul. The leak was contained. No casualties. No residential evacuations were required.
The Damrong Road facility supplies drinking water to central Phuket Town neighborhoods. Officials confirmed tap water quality was unaffected by the blast. A full equipment safety audit across all municipal water infrastructure is now underway.

What this means for residents
- If you live near Talad Yai: any unusual smell or discoloration in tap water should be reported to the DPM hotline at 076-211111 immediately.
- The emergency response was fast and well-coordinated. The ongoing infrastructure audit should be seen as a good thing - this is what accountability looks like.
- If family or visitors are staying in central Phuket Town, they can use the water normally. Running the tap for a minute before use is a reasonable precaution during the audit period.

Immigration Bureau officers raided a residential villa in Chalong on Saturday and arrested a Russian national sitting on an international extradition warrant - the alleged leader of a major organized crime syndicate. 600+ Companies Now Under Audit in Nominee Crackdown
The nominee business sweep has escalated significantly. Authorities have filed 39 formal court cases, are investigating 317 additional entities, and have opened audit proceedings on over 600 island-wide companies. Monsoon driving: what to do when the road disappears
Bang Yai Canal hit three meters this week. Phuket roads flooded in Patong, Muang, and Kathu. Same roads. Same spots. Every wet season. Here is how to handle it before it handles you.
Know your flood zones. Rassada, Saphan Hin, parts of Patong's lower town, and any road that dips under an overpass are first to go. If it rained hard for 20 minutes straight, assume those are blocked.
Save two numbers now. Phuket City Municipality emergency line: 1132. DPM hotline: 076-211111. Both are active during flood events and can tell you which roads are passable.
The 30cm rule. If you cannot see the road surface under water, do not drive into it. Flooded engines cost more than the time you save. On a motorbike, that threshold is even lower.
Carry a dry bag. Documents, phone, passport - waterproof pouch, always. A ฿150 bag from any hardware store prevents a ฿5,000 problem.
Adjust your timing. Most heavy rains hit between 2pm and 6pm. If you have flexibility, shift errands to the morning or early evening. Your commute, your stress levels, your bike - all better for it.

🛂 DTV holders: how to get 360 days without leaving Thailand
If you are on a Destination Thailand Visa and approaching 180 days, you can extend once for another 180 days by filing a TM.7 form at Phuket Immigration (Town or Patong). Bring your TM30 receipt from your landlord, DTV employment documents, and ฿1,900. No border run required. That is up to 360 days of continuous residence per entry. Details at ThaiEmbassy.com.
📱 TDAC: file at least 3 days before you fly to Thailand
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is mandatory for all international arrivals. It must be completed online before you board - not at the airport, not on the plane. Three days minimum. If you have family or friends inbound, tell them before they get to the gate. dtv.in.th
💰 Foreign income tax: the pre-2024 capital exemption still holds
Under Revenue Department Order Por. 161, if you have been in Thailand 180+ days this year, foreign income remitted into a Thai bank account is taxable at progressive rates up to 35%. The key exception: funds that demonstrably accumulated before 1 January 2024 remain exempt. Keep separate offshore accounts for pre-2024 capital with clear bank statements. Dibuka Phuket - Old Town, Dibuk Road
Southern Thai fusion in a building designed to feel like a Phuket tin-mining warehouse from the 1800s - exposed brick, industrial ceiling, proper lamps. It is not trying too hard. It mostly works.
The menu is the interesting part. Crab curry spaghetti with a soft-boiled egg. Squid stir-fried with salted egg. Heritage Southern Thai dishes reworked with enough restraint that they do not feel gimmicky. All-you-can-eat packages run ฿650-750. Live music most evenings.
Not for a quick Tuesday dinner. For a relaxed Friday night in Old Town before the weekend properly starts.
Before: A walk through Lard Yai Walking Street (Sunday) or a coffee at any of the Sino-Portuguese shophouse cafes on Thalang Road five minutes away.
After: The bar strip on Dibuk Road itself - several solid spots within 200 meters of the front door.
