From the Island
The Vegetarian Festival begins on Friday, and Old Town is going to be something else for the next nine days. Go Teng poles go up at more than 40 shrines across the island on Friday afternoon. If you have never seen it, you should.
There is practical news for anyone on a visa exemption. Thailand's 30-day entry limit replaced the temporary 60-day scheme three weeks ago, and airport immigration is now flagging anyone who has accumulated 150 or more days in-country this year for secondary screening. If that includes you, read section G carefully.
In development news, ICONPHUKET is confirmed: a 10-billion-baht retail and lifestyle complex going into Si Sunthon, part of a 50-billion-baht smart city masterplan. It opens in 2029 and will sit at the centre of the northern corridor's transformation. And Virgin Atlantic is now flying direct from London Heathrow to Phuket, three times a week.
There is a lot to get into this week. Let us go.

⚠️ Flood Watch
27 industrial water pumps are now active at 62 designated flood-risk points island-wide. Residents in low-lying basin areas should monitor private drainage channels and report debris blockages to their local district office.

The Week in Stories
Story of the Week: Vegetarian Festival 2026 begins Friday, and Old Town will be electric
Nine days. More than 40 shrines. At least 140,000 visitors expected. The annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival runs from 9 to 18 October, and it starts this Friday afternoon with the simultaneous raising of Go Teng poles across every participating Chinese shrine on the island.
The historic Jui Tui Shrine on Ranong Road in Old Town is the ceremonial centre. It is where the Nine Emperor Gods are formally invited to descend, and where the largest processions pass through.
The economics are considerable. Provincial authorities project 1.4 billion Baht in local spending across the nine days. Hotel occupancy in Old Town has already reached 80%, while outer coastal resorts maintain standard seasonal occupancy. For local businesses, this is the week the low season ends.
This year a dedicated evening procession has been introduced on Sunday 11 October, designed specifically for working residents who cannot attend daytime ceremonies. Daily Yiu Keng street processions feature Ma Song spirit mediums travelling from individual shrines toward Saphan Hin.
The festival draws participants from across Thailand and internationally, but it is fundamentally a local event. Most of the best viewing happens off the tourist trail, at the smaller neighbourhood shrines in the early morning hours.
What this means for residents:
• Central Phuket Town will be significantly congested, particularly Sunday evening during the night parade. Plan your routes around Old Town if you need to travel.
• Shrine grounds require white clothing, no meat, no alcohol. The rules apply to visitors as much as participants.
• Look for the yellow Jay flag on food stalls and restaurants this week. It signals fully plant-based cooking, prepared according to the festival's strict vegetarian rules.
If you are new to the area, our Old Town guide covers the food scene, the heritage circuit, and what has changed in 2026.

Visa exemption now 30 days, and airport screening is tighter
Thailand formally reverted to a 30-day visa exemption on 15 September 2026, ending the temporary 60-day scheme that had been in place since mid-2024. The change was published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August and is now three weeks old.
More significantly: Phuket Airport immigration is now treating cumulative in-country stays of 150 days or more per calendar year as a trigger for secondary screening. Officers are checking for return tickets, proof of funds (minimum 20,000 THB per person), and confirmed accommodation on the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC).
Remote workers and long-stayers who have been managing on visa runs are being steered toward the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), which provides a five-year multiple-entry framework with 180-day stays per entry. The land border exemption cap now limits foreign nationals to two visa-free entries per calendar year via overland checkpoints.

ICONPHUKET confirmed: 10 billion baht retail complex, opens 2029
Siam Piwat Group announced a 10-billion-baht ($300 million) investment to develop ICONPHUKET in Si Sunthon, Thalang. The hybrid retail and lifestyle complex is scheduled to open in 2029 and serves as the commercial anchor for the broader Synthesis Ark Phuket masterplan, a 500-rai mixed-use smart city project worth over 50 billion baht.
Developer projections indicate 80,000 to 100,000 daily visitors once operational. Phase 1 of the wider Synthesis Ark project, including luxury villas, commercial condominiums, and private schools, is targeted for completion by 2032.

Direct London-Phuket flights: Virgin Atlantic is now operating
Virgin Atlantic has launched nonstop service between London Heathrow (LHR) and Phuket International Airport (HKT), the only direct connection between the two airports. Flights operate three times weekly: departing Heathrow on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays; returning from HKT on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Mondays. The aircraft is a Boeing 787-9.
For residents expecting family and friends from the UK this season, the removal of a transit stop is meaningful. It also signals growing airline confidence in Phuket as a long-haul destination rather than a Bangkok connection.

🚒 Public Safety: 5,120 US Navy personnel from the USS George H.W. Bush are ashore on shore leave across Patong, Chalong and Old Town. The Department of Internal Trade has deployed price-monitoring teams to key commercial zones. Price gouging carries penalties of up to 140,000 Baht. Report issues on hotline 1569.
🚧 Infrastructure: The Kathu-Patong Expressway is moving ahead with a 2031 opening target. The road-and-tunnel combination is designed to cut travel time between Kathu and Patong from 30 minutes to roughly 5 minutes, with daily capacity for 50,000 to 60,000 vehicles.
🛂 Immigration: Phuket Immigration Volunteers are recruiting long-term expatriates to assist at immigration halls. Volunteers provide multilingual support and document guidance to retirees, tourists, and business owners navigating the new entry framework.

💡 Island Life Hack
How to attend the Vegetarian Festival without putting a foot wrong
Wear white: Clean white clothing is required on any shrine premises. Remove footwear before entering. If you arrive in black or grey, you will be asked to wait outside.
Eat Jay this week: Look for the yellow flag with red Chinese characters on food stalls and restaurants. That is the Jay symbol, indicating fully plant-based preparation with no garlic or onion. Old Town has it everywhere right now.
Go early for the neighbourhood shrines: The smaller shrines outside Old Town are where the real atmosphere is, early morning before the tourists arrive. Check the Cherng Talay and Bang Tao area shrines if you want a quieter experience.
Keep your distance during street processions: Ma Song spirit mediums perform intense ritual practices. Stay well back, do not photograph their faces close-up, and do not touch them or the sacred objects they carry.
Prepare for fireworks: Firecrackers run late into the night throughout the festival. If you are light-sleeping or have noise-sensitive pets, close your windows. The northern areas of the island (Thalang and above) tend to be significantly quieter after midnight.

The In-Between
Johnny Carter · weekly column
You are not starting from zero
Starting again feels brutal when you measure the new beginning against everything you are leaving behind. But here is what most people miss: you are not starting from zero.
Johnny Carter has restarted more than once, across business and life, and what he has learned is that experience does not tell you what to do next. It gives you something more valuable.
This week he shares the one question worth asking at the start of any new chapter.
"Starting again feels brutal when you measure the new beginning against everything you are leaving behind. But here is what most people miss: you are not starting from zero."

Out & About
Kopi de Phuket, Old Phuket Town
If there is one week to sit down at Kopi de Phuket, it is this one. The cafe has been doing the same thing for years: coffee brewed in small glass cups in the old Chinese-Phuket style, pepper biscuits (kanom prik thai), and a short southern breakfast menu that has not tried to be anything it is not.
Prices run 60 to 180 Baht for most things. It sits in the heart of the Old Town heritage circuit, which means this week it will be within a short walk of the main Vegetarian Festival shrine routes. Arrive before 9am if you want to get a seat without waiting.
It is a good place to start the day before the processions get underway. Take the walk down Thalang Road afterwards.

Property & Development Corner
Market moves this week
Luxury villas dominate on value, not volume. Savills Thailand's H1 2026 data shows 67 residential projects launched across Phuket, introducing 4,166 units worth a combined 52.96 billion Baht. Landed pool villas accounted for 51 of those projects and 700 units, but representing 61% of total market value at 32.5 billion Baht. Condominiums made up 3,466 units across 16 projects, concentrated in Surin (672 units), Chalong (688 units, anchored by the Aceller Hotel and Residence), Choeng Thale, and Kamala.
Medical infrastructure pipeline expanding. Two large hospital projects are advancing: the 20-billion-Baht Songklanagarind Phuket Advanced Medical Center and the 4.3-billion-Baht Bumrungrad International Hospital Phuket. Both cater to long-stay residents, retirees, and the growing medical tourism sector.
Legal Watch: The property-linked residency visa (one-year renewable) remains available for foreign nationals purchasing a condominium at a minimum of 3 million Baht or securing a long-term lease at 85,000 Baht per month. There is ongoing discussion about whether those thresholds are correctly calibrated to current island property valuations. If you are considering a property purchase for residency purposes, get qualified legal advice before committing.
