The festival finale, the nominee reckoning, and what we published this week

From the Island

The Vegetarian Festival ends this Sunday 18 October with a midnight firecracker and lantern ceremony at Saphan Hin. If you have been anywhere near Old Phuket Town this week, you already know what that means: temporarily closed roads, the persistent smell of incense from the shrine districts, and yellow-flagged vegan stalls from Kathu to Rawai. We wrote a full resident's guide before the festival opened. If you have been meaning to go, Sunday night is the last chance.

Separately, the government's proposed 1,000 baht flight departure tax is now in public consultation. A 300 baht tourist arrival fee is already before cabinet. For residents who fly regionally for work or bring family in from Europe or Australia, the compounding effect on travel costs is not trivial.

Immigration Division 6 found a Portuguese national mid-cooking class in Koh Kaew this week: 1,807 days overstayed. The location matters. These are field checks in suburban residential areas, not tourist-belt sweeps. If your paperwork is not current, sort it now.

And the Department of Business Development is running active audits of nominee company structures across Phuket. If you hold property through a Thai limited company, the window for getting your house in order is narrowing. We published a guide on this. More below.

A lot to get into this week. And we have been busy on the site too.

Quick Island Pulse

🌡️ Weather

Temperatures staying at 24 to 33\'b0C. Southwesterly winds at 15 to 30 km/h with occasional stronger gusts. Daily rainfall chance between 30% and 60%. West coast wave heights 1.0 to 2.0 metres with moderate southwesterly swell. Active meteorological warnings remain in place for heavy downpours, flash flooding in low-lying areas, and slope instability on hillside routes.

🚗 Traffic

Old Phuket Town (until Sunday 18 Oct): Vegetarian Festival morning processions running through Ranong Road and the Jui Tui and Bang Neow shrine districts from approximately 6am to 11am daily. Avoid these routes in the morning. Use the Bypass Road or allow an extra 20 to 30 minutes. If you are heading down to see it, our Old Town guide covers where to park and walk.

Darasamut Underpass, Central Phuket: Nightly single-lane closures continue for emergency barrier repair and structural restoration. Expect delays through the Central Phuket intersection after dark.

Thepkasattri Road, Thalang: Active police enforcement against heavy commercial trucks violating morning rush-hour transit bans. Add time if heading south from Cherng Talay before 9am.

💰 Baht

GBP: 44.46 to 44.50 THB (stable, minimal movement this week). AUD: 23.40 THB (steady, holding within normal range). EUR: 37.43 to 37.60 THB (flat). USD: 33.52 to 33.55 THB, improved from a weekly low of 33.73, reflecting moderate baht strength. (Rates via Bangkok Bank, as of 15 October.)

🛂 Immigration

Phuket Immigration returned to normal service on 14 October after the King Bhumibol Memorial Day closure. If you missed a 90-day report window, submit via the online portal now rather than waiting. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) remains mandatory for all arrivals: complete it at tdac.immigration.go.th within 72 hours of travel. Paper TM6 forms are gone entirely.

🗓️ Public Holiday

Chulalongkorn Memorial Day, 23 October: Full closure of government offices, immigration branches, land transport, and banks. Plan property transactions, visa renewals, and 90-day reports around this date.

Chalong Fishing Park

Chalong Fishing Park: The Home of Fun, Freshwater Catch & Release Fishing

Chalong Fishing Park is where people discover they're unexpectedly into fishing.

This isn't sitting in silence with a floppy hat and zero action. It's freshwater catch-and-release with Mekong giant catfish, Siamese carp, and redtails that pull considerably harder than expected. Experienced guides take care of beginners. Five hours disappears in what feels like twenty minutes.

For families or groups with non-fishing spectators: there's shade, hammocks, cold drinks, proper food, and a pool. It works for everyone from complete beginners to people who know what they're doing. Catch-and-release, so all the bragging rights and none of the cleaning.

The Week in Stories

The Vegetarian Festival ends this Sunday. The finale is worth staying up for

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival runs from 10 to 18 October. If you live anywhere near Phuket Town and have been on the island this week, you have already felt it: temporarily closed roads, the persistent smell of incense from the shrine districts, and yellow-flagged vegan stalls appearing on streets from Kathu to Rawai.

The major participating shrines, including Samkong, Sapam, Bang Khu, Naka, Jui Tui, and Tha Ruea, have been staging morning street processions carrying sacred palanquins through downtown intersections from around 6am. These are genuine acts of devotion, not tourist performances. The roads close without much warning on Google Maps, which is worth knowing if you are commuting.

On Sunday night, the festival closes with a midnight firecracker display and lantern release ceremony at Saphan Hin Park. The ritual typically starts from around 9pm and builds through to midnight. It is one of the more atmospheric things the island does.

If you are heading into Phuket Town for the finale, or just to eat at the festival food stalls, our Old Town guide covers where to park, what has changed, and which streets are worth walking this year.

The nominee crackdown is here. If not a nominee company, then what?

Thailand's Department of Business Development is running active audits of corporate entities in Phuket, targeting accounting firms and legal structures suspected of facilitating illegal foreign land ownership through nominee shareholders. The probe is reviewing shareholding records and corporate filings.

This is not new. The enforcement is becoming more systematic. And the question most residents are left with is the practical one: if not a nominee company, then how do foreigners actually hold property in Thailand?

We published a guide to exactly that. It walks through the structures that are available: freehold condominium, leasehold, usufruct, BOI routes, the Thai spouse structure, and what the actual risks and protections are on each. It is not legal advice. But it is the context most people need before they sit down with a lawyer.

If you hold Phuket property through a Thai limited company and have not recently reviewed your compliance structure with a qualified legal professional, this is the time. The cost of a compliance review is considerably lower than the cost of an enforcement action.

New on the site: the nightlife guide you can actually send to someone

We published our guide to Phuket's nightlife, bars, and beach clubs this week. It covers what is actually open, what the experience is like at each place, and roughly what you will spend. From beachfront cocktail spots and rooftop bars to proper late-night venues and the places in between.

This is the guide we wrote because the existing ones are either five years out of date, written for short-stay tourists, or thinly disguised affiliate lists. We wanted something you could send a visiting friend without having to add caveats. Catch Beach Club, Baba Nest, Timber Hut, Illuzion, Caf\'e9 del Mar, Xana. They are all in there, with what you need to know before you turn up.

If you have a spot we missed, let us know. This one will keep getting updated.

In the news: a 1,000 baht departure tax, and a cooking class interrupted by immigration

Departure tax: Government agencies are reviewing a proposal to charge international air passengers 1,000 THB each time they depart Thailand by air. Public consultation hearings are open. A separate 300 THB tourist arrival fee is already before cabinet. The tourism industry is pushing back, pointing to compounding friction at a time when Thailand competes directly with Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia. For residents who fly regularly or have family visiting, the cumulative cost over a year is real. Nothing is passed yet, but the direction is worth tracking. The Phuket News

1,807-day overstay: Immigration Division 6 carried out an unannounced compliance check at a restaurant in Koh Kaew this week. A Portuguese national was found to have been living 1,807 days beyond her permission to remain, just short of five years. She was detained mid-cooking class. The Koh Kaew location matters: these are suburban checks, not tourist-belt sweeps. Immigration Division 6 is actively running field inspections in residential and commercial hubs across the island. If your paperwork is not current, this is the week to sort it. The Phuket News

Also This Week

🚓 Public Safety: Phuket Provincial Police Commander directed 36 officers in a late-night sweep at Saphan Hin Park, impounding 22 illegally modified vehicles and detaining 22 young people for questioning after resident complaints. Elevated coastal park patrols continue through Sunday. The Phuket News

🏨 Development: The 669 households in Khok Tanod, Chalong facing eviction proceedings were advised to form formal housing savings cooperatives as a prerequisite for accessing government land subsidies. Provincial authorities are attempting to stabilise land tenure in a district under mounting commercial redevelopment pressure. The Phuket News

🛂 Immigration: Paper TM6 arrival cards are fully abolished. All non-Thai travellers arriving by air, sea, or land must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online at tdac.immigration.go.th within 72 hours before travel and carry the confirmation QR code. Do it before you get to the airport.

🏛️ Community: German cyclists Joscha and Xenia completed a 24,000 km ride from Berlin to Phuket, passing through 30 countries. They arrived at the Soi Dog Foundation shelter this week, having raised over $30,000 for stray animal rescue and medical treatment along the way. Soi Dog Foundation

🏖️ Environment: Flood defence pumping stations are discharging at over 70,000 cubic metres per hour across key drainage bottlenecks. The Phuket Bypass Road and Patong Hill passes remain flagged as high-risk zones during heavy rain. TMD warnings active through this week.

💡 Island Life Hack

Festival finale weekend: the short version

Reroute your mornings until Sunday: Avoid Ranong Road and the areas around Jui Tui and Bang Neow Shrines before 11am. The Bypass Road adds a few minutes but saves a great deal of sitting still.

Find the yellow flag stalls: Look for small yellow \'e0\'a8 flags outside restaurants and street stalls across the island. Fully vegan for the festival period. Many are 40 to 80 baht a plate and genuinely good.

Go to the finale on Sunday night: Saphan Hin Park from around 9pm. The midnight firecracker and lantern ceremony is worth seeing at least once. Take earplugs. Expect large crowds and limited parking.

Check your 90-day report window now: Immigration reopened on 14 October after the public holiday. The queue builds fast after a closure. Submit online rather than waiting for the in-person rush.

When the Plan Stops Matching Reality

When the Plan Stops Matching Reality

There is a point in almost every worthwhile chapter where the original plan stops being completely useful. Not because it was foolish. Not because you failed. Usually because you know more now than you did when you made it.

I have been reminded of that lately. There is a temptation, once you have committed to something, to defend the original version of it. The numbers were supposed to look a certain way. The timing was supposed to be different. By now, perhaps, you thought you would be further ahead.

So you keep measuring today against an old expectation.

But a plan is meant to help you navigate reality. Reality is not required to honour the plan.

Out & About

Zo Bar, Wyndham Grand Nai Harn Beach

Zo Bar opened at the Wyndham Grand on 6 October. It is a Japanese izakaya and cocktail lounge: fresh nigiri, sashimi, sushi rolls, yakitori skewers, and sake cocktails in a relaxed setting with Nai Harn beach in front of you.

Southern Phuket has been short of quality Japanese dining outside a handful of spots in Rawai town. Zo Bar addresses that gap at a price that doesn't require planning: 800 to 1,500 THB per person covers you comfortably. Nai Harn is also one of the more pleasant beaches on the island for an evening, particularly while the monsoon swells are still providing some visual interest.

It is a hotel restaurant, which means consistent service and a kitchen that won't run dry mid-evening. We haven't been yet. This is based on the opening week menu and early reports from residents in the area. The food quality is what will determine whether it becomes a local staple once the novelty settles.
