This week Phuket is in the news globally - and not for the sunsets.
The Air India flight that nosedived 300 feet leaving HKT a fortnight ago just got a whole lot more alarming. We knew the hydraulics failed. What we didn't know: the flight captain tested positive for controlled substances. Two more pilots followed. The airline is now drug-testing all 5,000 of its crew. That plane left Phuket.
Here's what else landed this week:
DEMOLITION NOTICES: 39 hotels and villas in Sakhu and Choeng Thale have received 30-day notices. Supreme Court mandate. DNP demolishes if they don't act.

The Plane That Left Phuket. The Pilot Who Was High.
Air India flight AI2379 departed HKT on August 4 bound for New Delhi. Shortly after takeoff it nosedived 300 feet in cruise, injuring 24 passengers and crew. Aviation authorities initially classified it as a hydraulic systems failure - and it was. All three hydraulic systems briefly lost pressure simultaneously, disrupting elevator and aileron controls for four seconds.
Then the toxicology results came back. The flight captain tested positive for controlled substances. Two more Air India pilots subsequently failed drug tests as the airline launched group-wide screening across all 5,000 crew members.
International aviation regulators are now scrutinising every carrier operating out of HKT. This story is not finished.
What This Means for Residents
If you fly regularly out of HKT: Regulators are now requiring airlines to demonstrate enhanced pre-flight crew screening. Tightened checks are coming - expect some short-notice schedule disruptions as carriers implement new procedures.
If something feels wrong on a flight: This incident is a reminder - unusual aircraft behaviour should always be reported. Thailand's Aviation Accident Investigation Bureau accepts reports at aaib.dotca.go.th.

The Department of National Parks has served notices on 39 hotel and villa structures built on protected forest reserves - a 2.08-hectare site in Sakhu (Nai Yang and Naithon perimeter) and a 1.92-hectare parcel in Choeng Thale. Supreme Court mandate. No extensions signalled. If operators don't act within 30 days, DNP carries out the demolitions itself. This is part of the same "Phuket Model" enforcement campaign that cleared Nui Beach - just further north now.

Karon Car Rental Operators Hit in Proxy Raid
Inter-agency task forces executed unannounced inspections on nine vehicle rental entities in Karon, targeting Thai nationals serving as legal proxies for foreign owners - a violation of the Foreign Business Act. The same week, Koh Samui saw nominee real estate holdings worth over ΰΈΏ1.5 billion investigated. This is a coordinated southern Thailand-wide push, not a localised incident. Car rental, hospitality, and property holding structures are all in scope.

Por Tor Hungry Ghost Festival - On Now Through September 6
The annual Hokkien-Chinese festival opened this week across Old Town shrines, centred at the Seng Tek Bel (Por Tor Kong) Shrine on Ranong Road. Street food stalls, red turtle cake offerings (Ang Ku), incense, and evening rituals running nightly. Peak ceremony day is August 27. Genuinely one of the island's best low-key cultural events - free admission, completely local, no tourist packaging.

Kathu-Patong Mountain Tunnel: Groundbreaking Confirmed for 2026
EXAT confirmed Phase 1 of the Kathu-Patong Expressway breaks ground this year. A tunnel through the mountain range plus elevated roadway links Kathu directly to Patong - cutting airport-to-Patong drive time from 90 minutes to 20. Commercial operation: 2030. Phase 2 extends north to HKT from 2027. Biggest single infrastructure news for Phuket residents in years.

Illuminating Peranakan Opens Sunday - Free 3D Shows in Old Town
TAT and Phuket City Municipality bring nightly 3D projection mapping shows to the Chartered Bank Intersection in Old Town from August 23 to 29. Shows run every 20 minutes from 19:00 to 22:00, projected onto historic Sino-Portuguese shophouse facades. Opening night Sunday includes Khon masked dance-drama and live outdoor jazz. Free admission all week. Pair with Por Tor and dinner on Thalang Road for a proper Old Town evening.

π« Phuket's International Schools Are Growing - Fast
Three of Phuket's main international schools have announced simultaneous expansion projects - and the timing tells you something about how many families are settling here for the long haul.
HeadStart International is adding a multi-sports pitch, expanded secondary classrooms, and upgraded dining at its Chaofah City Campus - plus secondary capacity growth at Cherng Talay. British International School Phuket (BISP) is expanding Primary School capacity for Years 3-6 at Koh Kaew. Lighthouse International School has already opened a new secondary campus in Rawai with upgraded science labs.
The spread matters: growth at both HeadStart and BISP is concentrated in the north (Cherng Talay and Koh Kaew), while Lighthouse's new secondary hub is in the south (Rawai). If you're choosing where to live based on school zones - or choosing a school based on where you rent - this expansion map has shifted the calculus.

π‘ Run the Reservoirs, Not the Beach
Mid-monsoon beach runs are punishing: saturated sand, headwind off the Andaman, and a solid 50% chance of a downpour halfway through. Residents who've been here a few seasons skip the coast entirely from July to October.
The local alternative: reservoir loops. Bang Wad Dam in Kathu has a smooth paved circuit around the water - shaded, flat, and genuinely pleasant at 06:00. Ban Bang Niew Dam in Thalang is longer and hillier, used regularly by cycling clubs. Both are cooler than coastal roads at the same hour, almost completely traffic-free, and you'll rarely share the loop with anyone until September.
Bonus: no tourist infrastructure, no parking hassle, and the views over the water are legitimately good.

π Foreign Income Tax - The Grace Window, Explained
The Revenue Department's current proposal: foreign income earned from January 1, 2024 onward can be remitted into Thailand tax-free, provided it's transferred in the year it was earned or the following year. Income earned before January 2024 stays permanently exempt on remittance. Affects anyone staying 180+ days per year. If you're banking offshore and remitting periodically, timing now matters. Talk to a Thai tax adviser before year-end - this is moving.
π» DTV - The Tax Catch Most People Miss
The Destination Thailand Visa gives remote workers 180 days per entry, extendable once in-country for ΰΈΏ1,900, across a 5-year multiple-entry scheme. Requirements: ΰΈΏ500,000 in savings (3-month history), applied from outside Thailand. The part people overlook: spend 180 or more days in any calendar year and you become a Thai tax resident. You cannot work for Thai clients or local employers under this visa - foreign clients only.
π’ LTR - Still the Gold Standard for High Earners
The 10-year Long-Term Resident visa maintains personal income tax exemptions on foreign-sourced income for Wealthy Global Citizens, Wealthy Pensioners, and Work-from-Thailand Professionals. Highly-Skilled Professionals get a flat 17% rate. 90-day reporting replaced with annual reporting only. If you qualify financially (typically $80k+ income or $250k+ assets depending on category), this remains the most stable long-stay setup available.

If you haven't been to Old Town in a while, this is the week to go. Two events running simultaneously, both free, both worth your time.
Por Tor Hungry Ghost Festival (nightly through September 6) centres on the Seng Tek Bel Shrine on Ranong Road. Street food stalls, red turtle cake offerings, incense, and ceremonies that have been running here for generations. Peak day is August 27. Arrive after dark for the atmosphere.
Illuminating Peranakan (August 23-29, 19:00-22:00) projects 3D mapping shows every 20 minutes onto the Sino-Portuguese facades at the Chartered Bank Intersection. Opening night Sunday has Khon masked dance and live outdoor jazz. The light shows run all week - free, no tickets, no booking.
Both venues are a short walk from each other. Combine with dinner anywhere on Thalang Road and it's a proper evening out that costs nothing to enter.

Strongest absorption remains in Cherng Talay, Bang Tao, Kamala, Rawai, and Nai Harn - pool villas and resort condominiums in the ΰΈΏ4.5M-35M range. Kasikorn Research revised Thailand's 2026 tourist arrival forecast upward to 31.36 million following a 12% surge in August weekly arrivals.
